Mills and lathes take control
A diverse selection of milling and turning machines demonstrated live at Southern Manufacturing by XYZ Machine Tools will highlight the benefits brought to a cross-section of manufacturing businesses, from the smallest tool room through to blue chip companies.
ProtoTRAK controlled mills and lathes will be represented by the SMX 3500 bed mill and the SLX 355 lathe. Both machines benefit from the company’s ProtoTRAK control system, using a range of conversational cycles, making it suitable for one-off and small batch quantities. The control can be operated without any knowledge of CNC, with operators producing parts within a day, with minimal training. The bed mills and lathes are robust, with solid Meehanite cast bases, Turcite-B coated bedways on the mills, and extra wide vee and flat bedways on the SLX lathes.
Also on display is the new 2-OP portable vertical machining centre (pictured), also with ProtoTRAK control. The portable, vertical machining centre can bring cellular manufacturing to virtually any machine shop, says the company. In addition to significant cycle time savings, it also frees up more expensive machine tool capacity from doing pre- or secondary operation work. Axis travel is 355 x 305 x 455mm (xyz), table size is 457 x 381mm, maximum table load is 250kg, and rapid traverse is 15m/min in all axes. Performance is enhanced by the use of a 3hp (50 to 6,000 revs/min) BT30 spindle that is supported by an eight-position tool changer; all within a footprint of 1,220 x 760mm.
A 710 VMC vertical machining centre and a Compact Turn 52 turning centre will also be on display. Standard specification of the VMC range includes an 8,000 revs/min 20hp spindle, with feed rates up to 20m/min in all axes.
The Compact Turn 52 has a footprint of just 1,700 x 1,450mm in its standard form. However, it still provides 5,000revs/min, 20hp spindle and axis travels of 185 x 325mm (x and y) with rapid traverse rates of 20m/min.
