Li-SOCl2 cells from Jauch Quartz provide long-term energy boost

There are 20 lithium thionyl chloride (Li-SOCl2) cells in the Jauch Quartz UK & Ireland range, complementing the company’s range of primary, secondary, and customised battery solutions. Many examples will be on show at Southern Manufacturing & Electronics 2022.

Managing director, Nicholas Ribton, elaborates: “For modern electronic devices, lithium thionyl chloride is a secure energy source with high cell voltage and energy density for maximum reliability in extreme temperature conditions”. They are typically used in automated meter reading, sub- and advanced metering infrastructures, residential/commercial/industrial smart meters and remote monitoring. “Our cells are extremely competitively priced and carry the same high quality, local technical support, and EMEA stockholding as our existing battery and frequency ranges,” adds Ribton.

At 3.6V, the cell voltage is “significantly higher” than that of other primary battery types. The voltage level is kept constant throughout almost the entire discharge period of the battery. The Li-SOCl2 cell’s energy density is up to 710Wh/kg, making it suitable for applications with low power requirements over long time periods, such as metering. The extremely low self-discharge rate (just 1% per year) means the batteries can be stored over a longer period. The batteries comply with the European REACH regulation, IEC60086-4, and are certified to UL1642.
